“We are praying for Malala Yousufzai”
What do people, who believe in a good and powerful God, do when they hear of terrible and unjust things happening to individuals who are trying to do good in the world? Some of us look for ways to get involved directly in righting the wrongs and ending the injustice. Others are tempted to turn away from the “bad news”, and may feel overwhelmed by the hard and scary things that happen in our world.
One thing all of us can do, though, even when we have our own doubts, is pray! And while other actions may also be appropriate and good, we must not think that somehow praying is failing to “get involved” — it is simply engaging the conflict in a different way, or, if you like, on a different front. If we know a God who is good and powerful, surely it makes sense to call on Him for help.
Malala Yousufzai, a teenage girl from Pakistan, was on her way home from school when she was shot by members of the Taliban, simply for advocating for education rights for girls. What she was doing was a good thing, and certainly did not deserve a violent sentence of death. And so countless people have rallied to her cause, praying for her recovery and strength, and desiring better treatment and access to education for girls and women.
All of us can encourage those we know and influence to remember the value of equality, and to treat all members of society with respect and love, regardless of our differences. And we can also add our voices to those already being lifted to God in prayer for peace, and for healing.
Let’s pray for Malala, for continuing courage in both fights — advocacy for education, and her own struggle to heal. As she begins to recover, she has asked her doctors to thank those who have supported her and prayed for her. Of course we do not pray to be thanked…but let’s make sure we do pray for the good of the world, and everyone in it. After all, we have many assurances in Scripture that God hears and answers our prayer. It looks like the survival of Malala is just one more of these miracles. Keep praying, and watch for more.
God bless you this week!
“…pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:18
